Before that, my favorite is "Setting Free the Bears". It's his first published novel, so it's rough around the edges. It's been a long time, but I remember "The Water-Method Man" as being very funny. "The Hotel New Hampshire was post-Garp, and I remember thinking he was beginning to recycle some ideas, so I was disappointed. That's why "The Cider House Rules" was such a great book. Extremely well-written and a complete break from what he had written before!
