Well, Ms.Mudd, chickens are quite the experience. Believe it or not there are several articles out there on the web (maybe even one on NPR), articles which of course i have not read, about the new urban chicken trend. Most urban-area feed stores actually have the chicks year round (even ducks, and rabbits sometimes). Or, the one in our area does. They are the sweetest little things, but you have to get more than two if you get them - due to the fact they need little friends or cheep cheep all night long, and when you are trying to keep an infant and toddler asleep, well, that cheeping makes you wonder how big they have to be before you can make hot wings out of them. plus, you have to have a cage (we used a cat carrier of all things for one set of chicks): neighborhood and feral cats, possums, coons, and city hawks make fair game of them, and they have to be kept inside of indoors during chilly weather. there is a mortality rate, also, among little chicks so you want to make sure you have more than 2 to ensure at least 2 survive... kinda like goldfish. but here is the rub: they poop!!!! and poop copiously. but they are very fun to hold, and respond to love. remember, chickens play tick-tac-toe and beat folks, supposedly, so love and sense are not lost on them. they are easy pets, easier than cats or dogs, eat bugs in your yard and are almost self-sustaining once they get old enough (i.e. no feed costs), but harder than betas and goldfish. and they may one day provide you with eggs... or hot wings (but i am vegetarian, so...)

OK, maybe I'll try it after all. I was tempted when I first read about it on Soulemama, but talked myself out of it. I love her blog, but I just look at her calm, peaceful photos, and I think "she must be on a different planet from the one I was on when my kids were small. And I only had two. And I didn't homeschool."

I think you must have inherited your love of cooking from your Grandmother Irene and your Aunt Hattie because you sure as heck didn't get it from me. If it doesn't come in a can from the food store then it is too complicated for me. However, I will say (drumroll, please) I do make a great loaf of bread. When I get inspired. Which is almost never.
Nonetheless (I love that word) I am so proud of you and Jack for forcing yourselves to eat pasta so it would not be wasted. Agter all, like my Mother used to tell me "You KNOW there are starving children in Armenia." I don't even know where Aremenia is but........
