I am totally geeking out on today's post because I LOVE DRAGONS.

I am to.ta.lly a Narnia girl, tried and true.

I love the fey, the elves, the dragons, the swords, the magic, the pirates, the magic.

Oh, man, I believe it because it is in my bones and even if I didn't want to believe in it, my bones would shake me until I did.

Wow.  That was an effusive geek tangent.

Um, so, I was gonna talk about a shitty side yard of my house when that spewed out.

My side yards are just hell.

Nothing ever done, really.

They don't bother me too much cause they get me where I'm going just fine.

I knew that they were "on the list" and would get done at some point.

We were waiting to do some hardscaping in the backyard so there was no reason to do the side yards as they needed to remain free and clear for the bruhaha.

But I think we've just nixed that all down and away which means....

This is the east (kinda north east, really) side of the house.

Big, tall fence blocking the low morning sun.  Bigger, taller, duplex blocking the mid-morning sun.

So, shady.  Mostly.

Dry as a bone.

Ugly as sin.

There ya go.

The truth, beatch.

No fancy fun photo manipulation here.

Stark and in need.

Just like Tony.

I just planted those soft yuccas this fall and they're ... alive.

Who knows?  I think they'll make it.  I do.

So, here's the layout.  Wait, first ...

LOVE the new awning Jackdaddy conjured up.

See the whole awning meets patio scene happening at the back of the photo?

Dark stain.

mmmMmmmmmmm.  (Still need dark stain on the awning, but you know what I mean.)

Then there's the hell yard/mulch/crazy soil thing.

I've had mulch + mega leaves on this side yard for years now.

You can't really tell in this picture, but there is a thick, thick layer of mulch/leaf crap here and I just keep adding to it.

The plan is I'm gonna rake that shit up and there's gonna be black gold under it.

(I'm being dramatic.  I already look all the time. It's OK, not great, but it'll work.)

OK, so, here's the plan.  Again.

Brown metal edging that I love.

Three healthy yuccas plant plus

a hearty, heavy sowing of orange Cosmos.  (Tall, thick, drought-OK orange!)

Olive house.  Orange Cosmos. Green yuccas.  Brown edging.

Oh, did I forget to say that I'm going to paint that A/C unit orange?

Did I?

Poppy orange in high, mofo gloss.

Last thing?

I am an ugly wall just waiting to have a giant, big-ass dragon painted on me.

Olive wall.
Red dragon
Brown and tin trim.
Brown metal edging.
Orange AC unit.
Orange Cosmos.
Green yuccas.

Don't you looooooooove me?

I love me.

I'm so excited!!!

It's making art.  All of it, art art art art art art art art art.

You can see more of my house art

I'm sure there are more, but I get to watch Downton now.

LATER, tater.

  1. Be prepared for a good cry with Downton. :( Waaaah!

SO, how in the world does one paint an AC unit? Do you have to take it apart to make sure you don't muck up the workings? It's going to look awesomesauce!!

You don't spray paint it, you just paint it carefully like anything else with mechanics in it. There's plenty to see on the www.

  2. You got some good space to play with! I just sit and stare at my yard. I am waiting for inspiration and hope that spring will bring some. I wait and I stare and wonder and wait. Keep Calm and Carry On!
    ms dd

    1. I've been lacking in ideas for soooooo long so it's so fun to have the ideas churning again. You know spring will get the gears in motion for sure!

  3. Am I the only person in the world who doesn't watch Downton? (Which I mistakenly called "Downtown", the other day.)

I love all your house art! You are so creative and fun and cool. That mermaid rocks!

Can't wait to see what wonders you do! Flowers too? Creeping vines? Oh la la.

    1. I was, until recently and now I am soooooo on board.

SOOOBBBBBBing as I type because I just watched Episode 4.

Thank you for all the sweetness.

    2. I thought it was Downtown Abby at first too, and didn't watch it for a long time thinking it was about some church thing down town somewhere. Heee hee

  4. Just make sure you DO NOT USE SPRAY PAINT ON THE A/C UNIT. It will get inside and really cause MAJOR damage. I think those units are that color because they need to be. I would re-think that idea most carefully. I feel major problems will arise because whatever the casing material is it needs to be like that. It has something to do with heat deflection All units are made of this stuff so I think you need to come up with another idea.

  5. The dragon is going to be awesome! But orange cosmos is full sun. How about Epimedium x warleyense? Orange flowers, likes shade.

  6. It is full sun over there.

The next portion over by the patio is shady, but the east side of the house gets plenty of sun.

I've never had any luck whatsoever with shade plants making flowers other than plumbago and ruellia.

    1. I meant some full sun where the cosmos is going. der.

I've actually had great luck with cosmos in a variety of places. I think full sun doesnt always mean full TEXAS sun.

  7. Re: your comment above, have you tried Mexican honeysuckle in shade, Mamaholt? It does pretty good for me and has ORANGE flowers. Not deep shade, mind you, but dappled or part shade. Can't wait to see your red dragon and orange AC!

    1. You know Pam, I take it back because I DID plant a MH because I saw it on your blog. It is growing wonderfully!! I've only have one flower, but it's only been in since fall. I think it will end up performing well. SO, thank you again for that. It's so pretty too...the vine. LOVE it. And I am still in awe of my almond verbenas that you recommended. Those things are like spraying perfume in the yard!

  8. I have a great book for you to read Dragon Girl! It's called Seraphina, by Rachel Hartman. I loved it!

    1. HI you!!! I was just drooling over your blog yesterday.

I am SO ordering that right now. I have a gift cert on amazon just waiting for me.

      So glad to see you.

  9. LOVE THE AWNING! What a handy man you got there.

  10. I shure do, Missy. If you were married to him y'all would be a force to be reckoned with. When you come visit, you're gonna make money by teaching a class on how to make pallet compost bins and tables.

    Wouldn't that be cool?

  11. You had me so all hooked into orange flowers and brown and green that I forgot all about the dragon! I can't wait to see it. And all that. I can barely stand to go outside these days, so I will live vicariously. :-) And don't even talk to me about Downton. Seriously. She was my favorite character. Remember the episode where she ordered the pantaloon thingies? How could you not love a girl who'd run off with the chauffeur? At least my worries about Mrs. Hughes seem to have been unfounded.

  12. So glad the plants are working out for you. But the Mexican honeysuckle I'm talking about isn't a vine but a shrub. Sorry, I should have given you the botanical name: Justicia spicigera. Give it a try and see what you think.

  13. I really love the color of your house, those awnings, all the stenciled art on the outside walls, and that DRAGON...will be awesome. I love those glimpses I see of the corrugated tin stuff.

I thought it was Downtown Abbey...never watched it, didn't know. Then Hub and I watched the first episode of Season 4 and we were hooked. I ordered Seasons 1 and 2, so we are catching up. I am saving all of Season 4, NOT watching it until we get caught up, but I did hear that one of my favorite characters (so far)dies. Darn!

  14. oh - love love love your side yard plan! Can't wait to see the dragon take shape - and orange... yes! Orange! (Although as others have stated - cosmos require full sun.... you'll find something).

All the action is here in the comments. You want some action, don't you?
