OOOO lawdy, I had to really control ye olde checkbook at Savers the other day.
Sometimes that Christmas crap just seizes my brain up and makes me buy things that I should not.
Well, it's not that I shouldn't, per say, it's just that it ... well, you know, it's crap.
But it's really adorable Christmas crap!
I left behind a weird elf angel boy, an owl, a crazy Spalding duffel bag (not Christmas, but cool), a super kitschy rabbit couple, and some wacked-out, super hipster, low boots for Jackdaddy that would never see the light of day on him not matter how I pleaded.
Having resisted all that, I decided that this year I "needed" to have lots of mismatched holiday dinnerware. I love Miss Match on the table anyway, she's just so sassy and wabi-sabi.
I snatched this sweet, old-fashioned set right on UP ...
Holly, sweet Holly.
If I had a baby girl at Christmas time I would name her Winter.
Or Holly.
I have a friend who is a Christmas baby and her name is Colleen Noel...isn't that prettypretty? (She is too!)
Anyway, Christmas stuff is funny. There are holly prints that are just godawful and then there are the dainty, precious holly prints. I got the dainty, precious ones.
So simple, so classic. I love, love, love them. Complete with a little gold trim to match my Nana Eileen's china that I have.
Can't you see these with a crisp white tablecloth, the good sterling, and some Holly branches tucked here and there?
Omg, remind me to show the incredible silver that Jackdaddy's mama gave us when we married.
Girl, girl, girl.
Dutch. From the WWII era. Insanely gorgeous.
I would use it every day if I could. Wear purple and use the good silver.
You know that poem by Jenny Johnson, right? Warning?
OH, well then, we must have a detour.
When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And stain sandals, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And govvle up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railing
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick flowers in other people's gardens
And learn to spit.
You can wear terrible shirts and grown more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.
But now we must have clothes that keeps us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.
But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.
AMEN, sister!
Don't you just love that poem?
(I'm already there for the most part, but there's room for improvement, for sure.)
And now, a treasure!
A treasure for Finnigan!
Isn't that just the dearest thing?
I'm telling ya, there are few things in the world I love more than sailing ships and maps and compasses and spy glasses. Something in me just moves when I see this kind of thing.
A few seconds of peering into this and I am gone, gone, gone to Narnia.
OH, and if anyone asks you what I want on my tombstone (it could happen) you tell them this:
Heigh-ho, I'm off to Narnia at last!
I don't really want to be buried at all, but I might enjoy a tombstone somewhere. I dunno. Maybe the cremator could just tattoo it on my ass?
And, last, but not least, some of these trendy little trees that everyone is all aflutter over ...
I just crammed a bunch of them on my little reddish lamp table thingee and they look soooo sweet.
Now, the ones over there on the left are the trendy ones.
But, here's a little holiday secret for you. The ones on the right? Dollar Tree. TWO for a dollar.
Buy them, and some spray snow, and there ya have it!
Trendy, cute red base be damned! I like the Dollar Trees ones just as much.
(Don't bother going to the one on Burnet cuz I bought them all. Damn me.)
Next year I'm going to buy a gazillion of them and build a little winter wonderland on top of the piano. Some fuzzy forest creatures from Etsy ... maybe some little knitted mushrooms.
I'm all farklempt at the thought!!!
OK, and just one more little thing ...
I bought the most beautiful things on Etsy. Customized gift tags. Fancy, huh?
I am not really a fancy wrapper kind of person, but beautifully wrapped packages just slay me, and so I try a little bit harder every year to make mine better. I love brown postal paper with gift tags and beautiful ribbon. I saw these and swooooned.
I'll keep and use them every year. Won't that be a lovely memory for him? These gorgeous tags that convey so much. I keep going to the site and looking at them over and over again. LOVE them.
You know what else? They monogram them for free. Free! Isn't that so nice?
Why don't you go look around and see if something tickles your fancy.
Support an indie artist!
More sneak peeks tomorrow. Since FinnigantheCurious has his nose buried in the Warriors book series right now, there's very little chance he'll see the blog and I wanna show you some of the stuff I got him.
Nothing more fun than Christmas shopping for children.
Maybe, drinking excessively with your best girlfriends at a holiday party, but, other than that ... haw, haw, haw.
